Dylan Hunter
Major: Film and Video Studies
Videography and Social Media Intern for the Lafayette Aviators Baseball Club
How did you learn about this internship opportunity?
The opportunity to work with Aviators was brought to my major’s attention by our professors and the director of the program and I approached them and expressed how interested I was at the opportunity to work with the team.
How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals? How did being a Liberal Arts student at Purdue apply to your internship?
Being a liberal arts student at Purdue, specifically a Film student at Purdue, has given me a lot of opportunities to learn about all aspects of Filmmaking, video creation, and creative marketing. My internship especially helped in the creative marketing department, as it taught me how I can market to an audience of fans that want to cheer on their home town team.
What is a piece of advice you would give someone in your major looking for an internship?
Advice that I would give someone in my same major for getting an internship is expand your search beyond the one thing you plan on doing after college. Just because you may want to go on to make movies or television one day doesn’t mean there aren’t extremely important aspects to learn about when working for a sports team. Whether its videography, photography, or working on the video production team, the skills you learn by working with a talented group of people can give you the experience that you can use for a lifetime.
What key responsibilities or tasks have you taken on during your internship?
For my internship, my responsibility was to collect photos, but mainly videos of the games played by the Lafayette Aviator summer league baseball team. With this video I had to come up with ideas to use this content to post on social media that would appeal to audiences. Using my inspirations of the professional team’s social media, I decided I would post live game updates/highlights while the game was happening to show audiences who were not at the game how the team was doing during the season. The other video footage I would collect would also be used for promotional content and highlight videos.
In what ways has the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University supported your internship journey? How has your participation in our job-ready program specifically aided your professional development?
Purdue liberal Arts and the Job Ready program are the reason why I was able to do this internship with their support. I was able to stay in West Lafayette for the summer and follow an internship that would influence my search in careers going forward. Being an CLA student comes with a lot of benefits mainly with the sense of community. Many of the majors that fall under the CLA umbrella are smaller in size than our comrades in the Engineering and Business School. With this community comes a lot of group support.
Could you highlight a standout aspect of your experience in this program that you find particularly noteworthy?
A standout experience I had with the Job Ready Program was working with Kristi Roza-Cabello, who was extremely helpful in helping me with the process of the Job-Ready program, explaining about the things I would need to be looking out for in the future during my internship!
