Matt Stachler

Majors: Political Science; Communication (Political and Civic Communication)

Political Intern, Gingrich 360

1.) How did you learn about this internship opportunity?

I learned about this internship opportunity by looking online for internships in the Washington DC area and through my network in the political and communication fields. I had previously run into Newt in prior roles and connected with his staff which led to getting this internship.

2.) How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals?

My internship has helped me build new skills and clarify my career goals as I've been able to explore more of the communication side of politics and had a lot of new responsibilities. I learned I really enjoyed being a part of discussions on strategy, helping with consulting and polling, booking and helping facilitate media hits, and writing up policy memos and press briefings for the Speaker and the Ambassador. I also enjoyed going to the Hill with Speaker Gingrich and helping with his podcast production. After I complete this internship, I think I will further explore career opportunities in political communication as well as other legislative and policy positions.

3.) How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills to your internship?

I apply my Liberal Arts skills to my internship by using what I learned about research methods and statistics in political science when looking at polling and analyzing data, and by using what I've learned at Purdue about the history of Congress, communication skills- both written and oral in my day-to-day tasks helping Newt and Callista. I also use what I learned from Liberal Arts in using my diverse skillset to make the most of my internship experience and make lasting connections and build meaningful relationships.

4.) What is a piece of advice you would give someone looking for an internship?

A piece of advice I would give a political science or communication major looking for an internship is to take initiative and reach out to connections you meet in the field or even those you don't know but want to get to know. All it takes is one email or phone call and you'd be surprised how many people are happy to help you and want to see you succeed and get into the career that you want. Also take advantage of the resources Purdue offers and the vast network of alumni and mentorship programs.
