Communications Intern, Doden for Indiana Governor

1.) How did you learn about this internship opportunity? 

I learned about this internship opportunity through a connection from a previous senate campaign I worked on.

2.) How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals?  

My internship has given experience directly in a career path I'm interested in pursuing. The skills I have practiced in this role such as video editing and media writing are preparing me for my future career and helping me discover communication tools I enjoy using.

3.) How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills to your internship?  

The skills I have learned in the College of Liberal Arts have allowed me to excel in this internship. Having the theoretical knowledge base Purdue provides guides me to apply effective communication skills in real world situations. Experience from courses like Public Affairs Broadcasting and PR Techniques have taught me important skills that I use each day. 

4.) What is a piece of advice you would give someone looking for an internship?   

Build your network! I have gained almost every internship opportunity I've had by leveraging my connections and the connections of others. Take the initiative to reach out to professionals that interest you and don't be afraid to ask for their help and guidance. They are almost always willing to support your journey and connect you with opportunities. Once you make a connection, maintain that relationship by checking in every few months. You never know where a simple phone call or coffee chat may lead!
