Majors: Political Science, Communication (Media and Mass Communication)

Office Intern, Cook County State Attorney Office

1.) How did you learn about this internship opportunity?

I learned about this opportunity through the CLA Job-Ready website. As a political science student with aspirations of going to law school, there are limited opportunities to get involved in the legal field as an undergraduate. Job-Ready helped me find a few options to pursue, and they ended up being very fulfilling.

2.) How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals?

My internship with the Cook County States Attorney’s Office has helped me prepare for what is expected when working as a lawyer in public service. The Assistant State’s Attorneys have been very helpful in teaching me exactly what their job entails and have had patience and understanding with the fact that I have not completed law school yet. This internship has opened my eyes to the reality of being an attorney and has helped solidify my decision to pursue law school after graduation from Purdue.

3.) How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills to your internship?

My internship requires significant writing skills and logical thinking, two things the College of Liberal Arts has emphasized since my first day. Drafting documents for the ASA’s requires succinct but persuasive writing in order to accomplish their goals in a timely manner. Reading cases and contemplating what evidence is needed and how to proceed with the charges in the most effective way requires an abundance of critical thinking and logical reasoning. Sometimes the facts are not always clear, and in those instances one must be able to take a step back and think about it from a different perspective. Communication is also a major part of my job. Speaking with victims and witnesses requires empathy and clarity, and communicating frequently with collogues is crucial for success.

4.) What is a piece of advice you would give someone looking for an internship?

I recommend applying to as many internships as possible in order to maximize your success, even if it feels a little out of your comfort zone. You never know what opportunity may lead to a new career goal or open doors you never imagined. Many of the internships will be unpaid, but don’t let that discourage you. What these internships lack in monetary compensation they make up for amazing experiences that will set you up for success in your future. There are an abundance of opportunities out there, just keep looking!
