Major: Communication (Public Relations and Strategic Communication)

Media Relations Intern, Mekky Media

1.) How did you learn about this internship opportunity?

I found my internship by making a connection with Michelle Mekky, the founder, at a PRSSA event. We connected after the event and I inquired about future connection opportunity in PR and she took it upon herself to connect me with Courtney, the director of Mekky's internship program, who then gave me a writing test before I eventually passed and was offered an internship.

2.) How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals?

My internship has helped me to establish real world experience in my degree field and put my knowledge and skills to the test for the first time. It has given me insight as to what agency life is like in PR and how to function as an employee while working remotely.

3.) How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills into your internship?

My liberal arts skills have been helpful thanks to the wonderful instructors in the Brian Lamb School of Communication. At the start of my internship, the hardest part was adjusting to the way the agency functioned but when it came to my assignments, I had the upmost confidence in my ability to complete them. It has been wonderful to apply my coursework in a job.

4.) What is a piece of advice you would give someone looking for an internship?

Be sure to see if it is the right fit for you. Internships are important, but if you just take a job because it was offered to you, you may have passed up a better opportunity down the road.
