Department of History student Johari Tello presents remarks at University Hall rededication ceremony
Purdue University hosted a rededication ceremony on Saturday (Oct. 25) to mark the completion of University Hall's renovation, an ambitious project that restored Purdue's oldest building while ushering in a new era for the College of Liberal Arts.
A highlight of the university's homecoming celebration, the ceremony featured remarks from Purdue President Mung Chiang; John Norberg, university historian, performing as John Purdue; Joel Ebarb, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts; Marcel Sassola III (BS pharmacy, '83), lead donor; and Johari Tello, a current BA-MA student in the Department of History.
Originally opened in 1877 and funded in part by John Purdue’s founding donation, University Hall has long held a central place in campus history. The renovated facility now includes updated classrooms, welcoming student-services areas, and modern study and collaboration spaces. For the first time, all Liberal Arts student services — academic advising, career advancement, recruitment and study abroad — will come together under one roof.
At the building’s heart is a two-story central gallery — once the university’s original library — now reimagined as a vibrant student hub filled with natural light and designed for both quiet study and group work. Other key features include an academy overlook on the second floor; faculty offices with sweeping views of Memorial Mall; and huddle rooms, collaboration spaces and modern classrooms throughout.
Thanks to the generous support of Purdue alumni, donors and leadership, University Hall is poised to become a popular destination for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
