Before coming to Purdue in 2006, Dr. Useem was a Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico and Director of the University’s Institute for Social Research. Much of his research deals with how criminal justice institutions respond to threats to the social order. He has published two books on the causes, course, and consequences of prison riots, and has a forthcoming book on the prison buildup in the United States. An article on prison riots, published in the American Sociological Review, received prizes from two sections of the American Sociological Association.
