JoAnn Miller received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1984 and joined the Purdue University faculty in 1984.

Dr. Miller’s recent book coauthored with Dean Knudsen, Family Abuse and Violence: A Social Problems Perspective, was published in 2007. Her new book, coauthored with The Hon. Donald C. Johnson, is titled Problem Solving Courts: New Approaches to Criminal Justice.  It will be available in October 2009 and on display at ASA and SSSP meetings in August, 2009. She has been awarded National Institute of Justice, Dept. of Health & Human Services, and MUCIA grants and has authored over 25 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals such as Social Problems, Law & Society Review, the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, The Sociological Quarterly, The Journal of Interpersonal Violence, and Violence Against Women. She authored and coauthored book chapters that appear in a Sourcebook and a Handbook and presented papers, seminars, and workshops at international, national, and local venues. She was Associate Editor of Social Problems (1994-1996) and served as Editor of Contemporary Sociology with Robert Perrucci (2001 – 2005). She teaches courses across all levels of the curriculum, from large Social Problems lecture halls to PhD Seminars on Marriage and Family Law.  Professor Miller and Profesor Rankine created the College of Liberal Arts Center for the Study of Prevention of Race, Ethnic Group, and Gender Violence.
