Dr. McElhattan’s research addresses punishment and social control, the sociology of law, and relationships between criminal justice policy and social inequalities. He focuses primarily on the set of formal and informal barriers — known as “collateral consequences” — that people face as a result of contact with the criminal legal system. His work has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Criminology & Public Policy, Law & Society Review, Law & Social Inquiry, and Punishment & Society.
