Major: Interior Design

Interior Design Intern at Gensler

How did you learn about this internship opportunity?

I visited the Gensler Chicago office during a Purdue Interior Design class field trip and was interested in the company. I found their open applications on LinkedIn.

What is a piece of advice you would give someone in your major looking for an internship?

Demonstrate yourself as a unique individual. Don't try to fit into what you think people expect of you. Showcase what makes your designs special from how you think and what you value.

What key responsibilities or projects have you taken on during your internship?

I was a real team member of multiple projects in the sports studio, including the Grand Sierra Resort Arena, Rose Bowl, UCLA, and other confidential projects. I have been involved in selecting materials, modeling in design software, using AI to create visual presentations, participating in client meetings, traveling for site visits, and making corrections to technical construction documents.

How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals? How did being a Liberal Arts student at Purdue apply to your internship?

My internship helped build my skills in design, collaboration, and problem-solving. By being a part of real projects, I was even more inspired to make a difference that would lead to an impactful, positive outcome. Being a Liberal Arts student at Purdue exposed me to the correct curriculum and resources that prepared me to be successful in my role at Gensler.

In what ways has the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University supported your internship journey? How has your participation in our Job-Ready program specifically aided your professional development?

Being away from home for the internship was difficult because I had extra living expenses to pay for. The Job-Ready Program assisted me in being able to live in Los Angeles, leading me to make the most out of a great internship. Attributes I developed from the CLA, such as my curiosity to learn, helped me form new and lasting connections with numerous coworkers, leaders, and clients.

Could you highlight a standout aspect of your experience in the Job-Ready program that you find particularly noteworthy?

The Job-Ready program solidified my confidence and aspirations to become an interior designer after graduation.
