Specialization: political ecology, anthropology of space and place, indigenous rights, Amazonian anthropology, communities and conservation

Dr. Zanotti is a cultural anthropologist whose research program concentrates on the interaction between communities and the environment.  Zanotti is also interested in the impact that extralocal politics, ideologies, and markets have on the livelihood strategies of indigenous communities.  Her research explores several different facets of human-environmental relationships: (1) local place-making practices and place attachments; (2) gendered uses and knowledge of the landscape; (3) creative political and economic solutions and responses to global trends; (4) the formation and retention of diverse partnerships and alliances; and (5) resource management and territorial land-use change.  She has conducted fieldwork in the Brazilian Amazon among the Kayapó and in Alaska with the Iñupiaq.  In upcoming research projects Zanotti will further explore the entanglements between nature, place, identity, and space.
