How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?

My internship really helped me convey my legislative research and writing in a manner that was easily accessible and digestible for the public. Through this internship, I have since decided to in fact pursue a career in public service in an effort to make my community a more inclusive place to live.

How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?

This internship required intensive research skills. For example, I wrote a piece for our newsletter about the 2019 legislative session for the Indiana General Assembly. To do so, I had to utilize my research skills and determine which bills would impact our constituents and if so, how and to what extent. These research skills are essential and in any legislative field, as well as within Liberal Arts.

Describe your typical day as an intern.

Much of my work with the Campaign for Hoosier Families was done individually. My typical responsibilities included tracking Indiana legislation that pertained to low-income families, compiling that research into an article for the public to read, and coordinating  volunteers to combine those articles into a newsletter.

I was also tasked with assisting the Campaign for Hoosier Families at Mosey Down Main Street, an event in Lafayette in which we gave out information about the work we do as well as some free swag!

What was the most challenging aspect of your internship?

The most challenging aspect of my internship was coordinating everyone's busy schedules and putting out newsletters in a timely manner. This also was the most exciting part as it was great to see the final product come together and for it to be sent to such a large amount of people.

Describe the most meaningful experience you had as an intern.

When your internship involves advocating with low-income families, your entire experience is meaningful. Every moment I spent with people extremely dedicated to improving the lives of Hoosiers across the state was extremely meaningful to me and inspired me to pursue a life in public service.

How did you learn about your internship?

Mary from the Career Center told me about it!

Did you meet with the Liberal Arts Career Center prior to applying for this internship? What kind of assistance did you receive?

Yes, Mary assisted me with the application process.
