Advisor's Guide to PLaCE

Quick Guide on Course Placement (English Language or Written Communication)

This Guide provides information for advisors how PLaCE identifies inncoming international students who will benefit from support as they intergrate into the university during the first year of undergraduate studies.

Purdue admits international students from many different countries and language backgrounds. Since its creation in 2014, PLaCE has been charged with:

  • identifying incoming international students who will benefit from support as they integrate into the university, and
  • offering a two-semester sequence of courses (SCLA 11000 and 11100) to provide that support.

Incoming international students are selected into the most appropriate courses for their first year of studies at Purdue based on their demonstrated English language proficiency.

To understand PLaCE process of selecting and exempting students from SCLA 11000 and 11100 requirement, please read "Selection and Exemption Criteria" section of this Guide.
