Zhuo (Joyce) Liu Headshot
Zhuo (Joyce) Liu is a student in Hospitality and Tourism from Yunnan, China.

How did you get interested in your field of study?

During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to work in a hotel as part of my internship, and that experience completely changed my perception of the industry.

What did you find most beneficial in SCLA 620?

As a new international PhD student with an assistantship, I face a real challenge: teaching undergraduate students. This requires not only strong English proficiency but also effective public speaking and classroom communication skills, which I initially didn't have.

What specific language, communication, and presentation skills did you improve on in SCLA 620?

I learned that slowing down my speaking pace, making clear communication statements, and regularly checking audience comprehension can greatly enhance the quality of a presentation.

What aspects of communication with undergraduate students in SCLA 620 did you find helpful and why?

I really appreciated the opportunity to invite undergraduate volunteers to serve as our presentation audience and to interact with them during the Q&A sessions.
