Liberal Arts in Taiwan

The College of Liberal Arts, in collaboration with the College of Engineering’s GEARE program, visited Taiwan in May 2023. Given Purdue’s current strategic initiatives with the semiconductor and microelectronic industries in East Asia, the purpose of this visit was to align Liberal Arts with STEM education to comprehensively prepare Purdue students for future participation in these industries.  Through a series of university visits), CLA has identified intentional partnerships that will facilitate multidisciplinary opportunities in both countries while also establishing new pathways for accelerated Mandrin language acquisition – a Critical Needs Language by the Department of State. The group travelled with leadership from the School of Languages and Cultures (SLC) and discussions with prospective partners emphasized SLC’s collective mission that language acquisition can empower a culture of global innovators at Purdue. Through these efforts, the College is well-positioned to enhance student mobility in East Asia while also supporting Purdue’s broader initiatives in these areas of interest.

Huayu Best

With funding from the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, Huayu Best is an intensive language program that permits students to study at the Mandarin Training Center (MTC) at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) for varying amounts of time. This program creates new avenues for Purdue students to engage both in language training and industry partnerships through this university connection in Taiwan. The program will be administered by NTNU and students who participate will study varying levels of Chinese language (101-402) for 6-9 credits over a 2-3 month period during the summer.
