Swati Srivastava completed a Ph.D. in political science at Northwestern University, her master’s in international relations at the University of Chicago, her bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of California Los Angeles. She joined Purdue’s faculty in 2018.

Srivastava’s research focuses on international relations, especially private actors in global governance. She examines how sovereign power is exercised through nonstate actors such as charter companies, security contractors, business associations, and NGOs. The resulting book, "Hybrid Sovereignty in World Politics," is under contract with Cambridge University Press. A second project explores the global politics of Big Tech and the related challenges of algorithmic governance. For this work, Professor Srivastava founded and directs an undergraduate research lab on Big Tech and Political Responsibility. She also theorizes relational approaches like constructivism and new kinds of responsibility.

Her research has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Andrew Mellon Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Buffett Institute for Global Studies. Srivastava’s body of research shows the significance of private and hybrid actors in global politics while advancing knowledge on sovereignty, power’s relation to authority, and responsibility.

Srivastava has been awarded the Excellence in Discovery and Creative Endeavors Award from the College of Liberal Arts, the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the Antonia Syson Cornerstone Outstanding Teaching Award.
