Graduate Student Committee

Introduction:

Starting in April 2010, the School of Languages and Cultures established a graduate student-run organization to oversee the responsibilities and extra-curricular activities of the graduate students. The goal is to have more transparency within the department and to strengthen and further enrich the academic experience as a whole for all students.

Through this group, the committee hopes to provide resources, support, and encouragement for incoming and current students of the department so that upon graduation, whether it be after the completion of a Master's degree or a Ph.D., all students are prepared for their careers in teaching, academia or any other field.

The Graduate Student Committee is divided into several subcommittees which are always looking for additional volunteers. We understand that schedules are tight (they are for all of us), but we hope that each graduate student can spare a few hours every semester so that this organization can accomplish what it set out to do: to make your experience in the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue exciting and rewarding!

Membership:

Any Purdue University graduate student in SLC is eligible for active membership in the organization. Purdue University staff and faculty are eligible for adjunct membership, which means they may not vote or hold office. Active membership is defined as any Purdue student enrolled in one of the graduate student programs offered in SLC. There is no registration or membership process required for students who meet the above-mentioned criterion. Active members are welcome to participate in all SLC Graduate Student Committee events.

Each officer will be elected after nominations during the spring semester and the term of this position will be one year, until the following election. These officers will make up the executive committee of the SLC Graduate Student Committee. Other officers may be elected when it is deemed necessary by the executive committee.

SLC Interdisciplinary Symposium in Liberal Arts

Every spring semester, the SLC Graduate Student Committee organizes the Interdisciplinary Symposium in Liberal Arts. This event aims to foster connections among graduate students, both within and beyond Purdue University. Each year, the symposium explores different themes. We welcome proposals related to the annual theme as well as those covering various areas of liberal arts, including Languages and Cultures, Linguistics, Anthropology, Art and Design, Communication, History, English, Interdisciplinary Studies, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, Language Education, and Theatre. Even graduate students awaiting their results can participate by presenting their literature reviews, methodologies, hypotheses, and anticipated outcomes.
