In addition to the traditional Masters and Ph.D. programs, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Purdue offers a non-degree option that helps students complete professional requirements, develop new knowledge and skills, or explore graduate school options. Each semester the department will offer Spanish graduate courses in the evening. These courses are taught by leading scholars in Spanish literature, linguistics, film, and culture. Dr. Mariko Wei will present on the topic, “Bilingualism in the Autism Spectrum Disorder: Should My Child Learn a Second Language?”
Diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have soared to one in every 68 children in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). Because of severe delay in their first language development, bilingual parents of children with ASD are commonly advised by educational and health professionals to speak only one language with their children (Dychess, 2004; Kremer-Sadlik, 2004). Consequently, these parents are afraid of speaking their heritage languages to their children with ASD for fear that speaking more than one language would exacerbate their impairments (Wharton, et al., 2000; Yu, 2013). A small but growing number of researchers, however, has reported the positive impact of bilingualism on language and cognitive development of the ASD population (Peterson, 2010; Tardif & Fletcher, 2008). Future studies should determine whether children with ASD have the capacity to be balanced bilinguals and explore their unique language developmental processes. Furthermore, studies that shed the light on parents’ current practices on bilingualism with their children with ASD and what factors affect their decisions or their outcomes are needed.
In this presentation, I will discuss the four studies I have conducted over the past few years. The first study (Wei, 2012) investigated whether bilingualism would cause additional delay in vocabulary development in children with ASD by comparing the vocabulary knowledge of English-Japanese bilingual children with ASD to those of bilingual children without ASD and to monolingual children with ASD. The second study (Wei, 2014) examined the perspectives of bilingualism and language practices of the Japanese parents who were raising children with ASD in the U.S. The third (Wei, 2016) and the fourth studies (Wei, 2017) investigated possible effects of six instructional interventions on reading comprehension skills of English-Japanese bilingual children and adolescents with ASD. As more children are diagnosed with ASD, more students with ASD are entering the general education classroom, and teachers are faced with daunting tasks of understanding their special needs and formulating strategies that will help them succeed. The pedagogical implications for teaching material preparation and remedial instruction for learners with diverse needs and particular cognitive processes will be discussed.

The first Purdue Languages and Cultures Conference is a collaboration between three organizations at Purdue University which promote scholarship in the fields of linguistics, literature and applied linguistics. Our conference seeks to continue the tradition of our respective symposia by bringing students and faculty together with other experts, fostering collaboration and inspiring critical analysis and understanding of pressing issues in the field of linguistics and literature. The Conference will provide undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers the opportunity to share their research. The funds received from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and other programs on campus allows us to bring top scholars for keynote addresses, prepare materials and documents critical to the success of the meeting, offer refreshments throughout the session, and – most importantly – to keep the Conference free for all interested attendees.
