The Black Sheep

How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?

Being a social media intern at a marketing and media company as fast paced as The Black Sheep has definitely taught me how to prioritize and manage my time better. As a communication major with a strong interest in social media, this internship has given me a better idea of what my future career may look like. Working full-time and collaboration with individuals in my intended career field has been helpful and exciting.

How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?

I apply my liberal arts skills in almost every situation. Even in the interview stage back in the spring, I found myself being able to prove how adaptable and well-rounded I am as a result of being a liberal are student. Being able to adapt and collaborate is a necessary skill in my internship. I am also required to communicate well and frequently with my fellow interns, remote interns, and employees in the office, which is not a problem thanks to liberal arts.

What is the a typical day like as an intern, any challenging or exciting aspects?

On a typical day, I am downtown and in the office by 9:30. I am busy almost every second of the day, managing and running over 30 social media accounts each week. Outside of creating content for and managing these accounts, I have meetings with the entire media team to brainstorm and create new content, and I have brainstorm sessions with my fellow interns several times a week to come up with creative solutions to problems corporate throws at us. My job requires a lot of planning, writing, and creativity. I am learning that thinking out loud goes a long way when trying to reach a creative solution. Everyone at the office works really hard and we work as we eat lunch most of the time as well. The work day ends usually after 5:30. I love brainstorming solutions to problems corporate has, and offering up my ideas on how to make this company thrive because it feels good when people put the ideas of intern's into play. One of my brainstorm sessions issued by corporate was how to make the national Black Sheep Instagram page better. After spending a couple days researching and brainstorming with my fellow interns, we created an extremely detailed powerpoint presentation and presented it to the social team. Seeing them actually implement our suggestions, and seeing our social accounts grow as a result has been so exciting for me.
