Tess Marshall

Political Science

U.S. House of Representatives

How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?

It has allowed me to get a more in-depth look at the way US government runs. I have also been able to explore my interest in working with policy issues or the federal government.

How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?

I have used my experience in political science, psychology, and management in this internship. The communication skills that I have acquired have helped me with constituent-related areas.

What is the a typical day like as an intern, any challenging or exciting aspects?

Typical day: answering calls, attending hearings, giving Capitol tours, drafting constituent letters.

Most challenging: working with angry constituents

Most exciting: getting to work with constituents who are happy to hear from me! Also, being able to go to hearings and interact with members of Congress.

Most surprising: How friendly everyone is on the Hill! Most meaningful: Being able to work with members of the district where I have lived for the past 18 years. I was so grateful to work for the community that made me who I am.
