Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun

Dr. Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Music within the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University. An internationally active soloist, chamber musician, scholar, and clinician, she has received critical acclaim for her performances and recordings. Her CD, Summerland, received outstanding reviews from American Record Guide and New Classics UK and has been broadcast nationwide on radio stations including WQXR, WCNY, WBAA, and NPR's Sonatas and Soundscapes.

Dr. Yun has presented concerts and master classes throughout the United States and internationally, including Malaysia, Thailand, Germany, Mexico, Japan, China, Spain, France, Italy, Taiwan, and South Korea. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the IBLA Grand Prize World Music Competition (Italy), the Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America, the Indiana University Travel Grant Competition, the Walton Concerto Competition, and the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition. She also received an Honorable Mention in the Liszt-Garrison International Competition for Collaborative Artists. She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra, the Indiana University Orchestra, and the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra.

Her dynamic career also includes serving as principal investigator on the National Science Foundation-funded project Artificial Intelligence Technology for Future Music Performers. Her AI for Music research team at Purdue explores the application of artificial intelligence to music performance and education. Projects include Automatic Music Transcription, the Robot Cello, AI-based Performance Posture Evaluation, and Sound Evaluation, all designed to support musicians. Her interdisciplinary research has been presented at leading AI and technology conferences such as ACM ICMI, AAAI, ICLR, and IEEE CAI. She has also been invited as a speaker to conferences and institutions including the ACM AI Leadership Summit and the Vision and Intelligent Systems at the University of Waterloo. Her work focuses on developing AI technologies that enhance music performance, education, and creativity.

Before joining Purdue University, Dr. Yun served as Associate Professor of Lower Strings at Colorado Mesa University. She has also performed as principal cellist of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and as a member of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and the Korean Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Yun earned the Doctor of Music degree in Cello Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with the legendary cellist Janos Starker. She also holds the Performer's Diploma from Indiana University and both master's and bachelor's degrees in Cello Performance from Seoul National University.

Dr. Yun performs on a French cello by Guersan in 1766.
