Outstanding Senior in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Marissa and Ashley standing together at award ceremony

"I started my senior year fresh from studying abroad in Ireland. It was a writer's program where I spent the spring semester in Dublin writing poetry and learning about Irish culture. Being back on campus after my semester away made me excited to jump back into my Women, Gender and Sexuality classes and hone in my research. I walked into my Feminist Theory class with a renewed passion, and it was here that I met Professor Marlo David for the first time.

She was so animated for a professor with a real and honest approach to teaching that she made me excited to walk into class every day and leave having learned something new. She talked to our class about her upcoming Reproductive Justice Conference, and since I had done a research paper on RJ, I spoke with Dr. David about joining her at this conference. She was overjoyed to have me on board, and she made my first conference experience wonderful and full of effervescence.

It is because of her and my other WGSS professors that I found the strength inside myself to continue my education in WGSS. My professors inspire me every day, and I feel so lucky to have known them and to have had the privilege of learning from them. I would not be the student nor the person I am today without my time in WGSS. It changed my life for the better, and I wouldn't have it any other way." Marissa Slagle 2026
