Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries

Postmodern Documentary Photography Exhibition and Symposium
September 23 - October 10, 2014
East and West Galleries
Symposium: Thursday September 25 and Friday September 26, LWSN 1142
Reception: Thursday, September 25, 7 - 9 pm

Documentary photography has undergone changes in the last three decades as it has become increasingly appropriated into the art world. Imagery that once used to illustrate pages in journals now often hangs on gallery walls. Many people have questioned whether this signifies a new path for documentary photography, and to what extent it can still function effectively in this new domain. As photography entered into the 21st century, the advent of digital technology completely changed the philosophy of construction of documentary photography. The common use of digital technology has increased awareness of how easy it is to manipulate documentary images. With this manipulation, new genres of documentary imagery have increased confusion as to how we define documentary photography.

Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts Enhancing Research in Humanities Grant at Purdue University, the Photography Program at Purdue University is hosting a symposium and an exhibition including lectures and panel discussions by internationally recognized artists and art historians addressing the current trends in all or some of the following topics in postmodern documentary photography: Documentary Form, Subject Matter, Challenging Ethical Norm, and Digital Manipulation.

The symposium will be held at Lawson center 1142, Purdue University from September 25th-26th. The exhibition, re[connect], is to take place at Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University from September 22nd -October10th.

The exhibit then travels to Syo gallery in South Korea from October 27th-Nov 7th and ADM gallery in Nanyang Technological University in Singapore from Nov 24th-Dec 8th, 2014.

About the Galleries

The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries, along with the Purdue Galleries, provide a vital component to the cultural life at Purdue University and its surrounding community.  The Rueff Galleries have the unique perspective of being a teaching and research space for students and faculty of the Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue. Housed in Pao Hall on campus, the Rueff Galleries offer exhibits and special events that speak directly to its mission of serving the students and faculty, while also expressing perspectives that are national and international in scope. The Rueff Galleries are named after Patti and Rusty Rueff, who were the benefactors instrumental in providing funding necessary to establish the galleries for the Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries regularly show over a dozen exhibitions each semester. Our exhibition schedule for the current term is available under Current Exhibition Schedule. Past exhibition schedules can be viewed under Past Exhibitions.
