Interiority in German Women's Writing
Title: Interiority in German Women's Writing
Co-editor: Beate Allert
Publisher: University of Delaware Press
Publication Date: July 2026
About the Book: This volume examines German women authors' contributions to the concept of interiority (Innerlichkeit) from 1750 to 1850. Shifting focus away from abstract medical and theoretical discourses, it highlights how women experienced and shaped inwardness in literature and philosophy from the Age of Sensibility through the Romantic era. Through case studies across theatrical works, poetry, letters, prose and fairytales, the book shows how women utilized creative spaces to define, resist and transform the self.
