Zach Hodges at Purdue

Unsure of his future career goals, Zach began his time at Purdue in Exploratory Studies. As he explored his academic interests, he initially considered pursuing a degree in education.

As he searched for the right career path, Zach knew he wanted a professional degree that would prepare him for an office-based career. In his own words, “I guess it’s not everyone’s dream, but it was mine. I thought it’d be fun.”

He enrolled in the course Engaging in English, where Dr. Bradley Dilger, Director of Writing, introduced him to Professional Writing. Zach quickly realized it was a good fit.

During his time at Purdue, Zach served as an executive board member of the Student Editing and Publishing Association. Experiences like these helped him develop skills that he continues to apply in his career.

Zach After Graduation

Today, Zach works as a Communication Specialist at Eli Lilly and Company. Before joining Eli Lilly, he interned at Authentics, an opportunity he learned about through Professor Jennifer Bay, whose graduate student happened to be hiring at the time.

Zach landed his current position after applying through LinkedIn. His previous internship with a company that does business with Eli Lilly, along with his healthcare experience and transferable skills from a related role, helped him stand out as a candidate.

His Advice to Incoming Students

“College is a great time to live and enjoy life. Build your network, make friends, and use your time wisely. If you have a free summer, volunteer or intern, paid or unpaid. Find an opportunity to build your résumé, and do it!”
