Biography

Jeremy Sklar is a visiting assistant professor in film and video studies.

Education

After studying acting at the University of Southern California and at Playhouse West under the tutelage of actor Jeff Goldblum, he completed a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College Chicago.

Experience

Jeremy ‘Jer’ Sklar began his career acting on the stages of Chicago before plying his trade in Los Angeles. Eventually, Sklar became a development executive with Strategic Film Partners and Topanga Pictures before settling in as a screenwriter and director with 2009’s pilot for HBO called HOLLYWOODN’T. In 2011, he was hired back by Strategic Film Partners and Vitamin A Films to write and co-produce the $5M parkour action film FREERUNNER.

From 2011 to 2013 Sklar served as writer-producer on the FX Network show TOTALLY BIASED produced by Chris Rock. After winning various awards for his short films, in 2020, Sklar made his feature film debut as a writer-director with the critically acclaimed film TOM OF YOUR LIFE. Film critic Richard Roeper of ‘At the Movies’/Chicago Sun-Times fame called TOM “one of my favorite films of 2020” and legendary filmmaker Paul Schrader (‘Raging Bull’ ‘Taxi Driver’) said “Sklar does what independent film does best: he tickles and entertains the brain.”

Sklar is a member in good standing with the actor’s union SAG/AFTRA as well as the screenwriter’s union, WGA-West, and is represented by The Arlook Group in Los Angeles. With an interdisciplinary BA degree in Theater and Film from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA in film directing from DePaul University,

Sklar is proud to be teaching the art of filmmaking and screenwriting to future filmmakers at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he currently resides with his dog Ajah.
