About
Fan Zhang is a New York-based sound designer and composer for theatre, dance, film, and immersive installations. Her work has been described as "smart" and "otherworldly" by The New York Times and Vulture. She is recognized with numerous prestigious industry honors, including the Drama Desk Awards, Lucille Lortel Awards, Audelco Awards, New York Innovative Theatre Awards, and the Henry Hewes Design Awards (American Theatre Wing).
Fan's work spans new plays and world premieres, including Lloyd Suh's The Far Country (Atlantic Theater Company), a Pulitzer Prize for Drama Finalist, and Our Dear Dead Drug Lord (Second Stage & WP Theatre) and Suicide Forest, both recipients of the Obie Award for Best Drama. Her collaborators include Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights James Ijames (Good Bones) and Eboni Booth (Paris). In New York, she is a recurring collaborator at Lincoln Center Theater, The Public Theater, Atlantic Theater Company, New York Theatre Workshop, Signature Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Vineyard Theatre, Second Stage Theater, Classic Stage Company, and many others.
Nationally, her work is featured across the country's leading regional theaters, including Ahmanson Theatre, Steppenwolf, American Conservatory Theater, Shakespeare Theatre Company D.C., Berkeley Rep, Arena Stage, The Old Globe, Huntington, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Milwaukee Rep, Studio Theatre D.C., McCarter Theatre Center, Alliance Theatre, and many others. Her work has also reached international audiences, with productions seen in China, Singapore, and across North America, including the national Canadian and U.S. tour of Kim's Convenience — the play that inspired the Netflix series — with original playwright Ins Choi and director Weyni Mengesha.
Beyond the stage, Fan designs sonic identities and scores for corporate events and commercial media, with a portfolio that includes BMW, Audi, Microsoft, Nike, and others.
