Export Controls Undergraduate Research Team
In response to escalating geopolitical conflict, countries are increasingly attuned to the use and design of export control policies. Such policies directly impact the development of dual-use technologies, including artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, and aerospace systems.
Dr. Girard supervised an undergraduate research team composed of three seniors - Jessica Bober (Nuclear Engineering and Political Science), Paola Godina Salas (Political Science and Economics), and Thendral Kamal (Aerospace Engineering and Political Science) - who carried out a year-long independent study of why Australia and New Zealand's export control reform processes diverged and the role of businesses in the reform process.
In coordination with student research teams from McMaster University and King's University College, the students presented their research to trade officials at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa (April 10, 2026). The research team was supported by the Margo Katherine Wilke Undergraduate Research Internship and Dr. Girard's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) grant (Grant Project: "Building Trust in Trade").
