Barbara Bruch has exhibited her work nationally and especially throughout the Pacific States over the past 30 years. Born in Seattle, she spent much of her childhood in California. Later, she returned to Seattle, receiving both a bachelor's degree and a master's of fine arts from the University of Washington. While at the University of Washington, she studied painting with Viola Patterson and Spencer Moseley, and specialized in printmaking with the late Glen Alps. She also undertook special studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara with Thomas Browne Cornell.
Barbara Bruch's career has become a model for feminist artists. As an educator, she has incorporated feminist ideals such as collaboration and support in curricula at all levels, elementary through university. She balances experimentation with varied comprehensive technical development, encouraging students to share the fruits of their own research. From 1967 through 1978, she was artist in residence for the City of Seattle, teaching printmaking and painting. She has also taught environmental art at Seattle Pacific University. Barbara Bruch has offered courses on collograph printmaking, the Tarot and has lectured on the stages of women's lives in the context of ancient sites and festivals in Britain, where she has traveled extensively. For many years, she directed gallery exhibitions, including the Husted Gallery in Seattle, and restored art in her Studio Tara.
Much of the artist's work draws upon her interest in metaphysics, archaeology and the physical sciences to create a new visual language to represent spatial concepts, healing, transformation, and cycles of existence. She has traveled numerous times to Britain, exploring and documenting ancient archaeological sites and museum collections. Her paintings and prints have been exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, Seattle Pacific University, the Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, the Henry Art Gallery, the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, Washington State University at Pullman, California State University at Hayward and numerous galleries in Texas, Florida, Washington DC, and Chicago. Currently, she is completing work on a Tarot deck and accompanying textual commentary. When finished, this work will be unique in its abstract approach to a long tradition. Her paintings and collagraph prints are in several public and over three dozen private northwest collections. Her illustrations have appeared in numerous northwest and national magazines, including Woman of Power, and she is a regular contributor to Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities.
In the Seattle community, Barbara Bruch was active in feminist protest in support of affirmative action and equity for women artists. She has served as member of the Seattle Women's Caucus for Art (SWCA) board for the past 12 years, as a past president of SWCA from 1991 through 1994, and she co-coordinated A New Space Gallery from 1986-1988. In 1997 she received the Kathe Kollwitz Award from the Seattle chapter of the WomenÕs Caucus for Art for her outstanding contributions to the position of women in the arts.
