A participant in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and a lesbian community photographer since the early 1970s, Cathy Cade is currently working on a collection of images about lesbian mothering. Other projects include: a poster of lesbian/gay/bisexual youth and a portfolio of hand-colored images from San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day Parades.
Over the years she has supported herself teaching college, being on welfare, housecleaning, doing office work, teaching photography in high school, and administering a project that helps people in developing countries build wheelchairs.
White and European-American, Cathy Cade has two sons and lives in Oakland, California with her partner, Lea Arellano.
