Degree Description

Purdue University’s Undergraduate Degree in Personal Fitness Training is the Nation’s first four-year degree program for students planning to pursue a career in personal training. This comprehensive concentration in personal fitness training is designed to supply essential education integrating exercise science concepts from the areas of biomechanics, physiology, neurology, motor learning, functional anatomy, pedagogy, training theories and techniques, etc. into a logical, progressive learning sequence for the student wishing to enter the personal training profession.

The Concentration in Personal Fitness Training integrates eight Clinical Practices in Personal Training designed to prepare students for careers working at medically-based fitness facilities, community wellness programs, personal training studios, physical therapy clinics, corporate fitness centers, YMCA’s, and private and commercial health clubs. Students learn the principles of exercise science, techniques of leading educational training sessions, and methods to develop personalized exercise prescriptions. The Concentration is designed to provide students with the theoretical framework and practical training skills necessary to prepare them for certification testing from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) organization with two designations: the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer® and ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor Certification®.
