Eric L. Clitheroe Memorial Scholarship

The Department of Philosophy invites applications from undergraduate philosophy majors for the 2022 Clitheroe Scholarship. The Clitheroe Scholarships were established in September 1987 as a memorial to Eric L. Clitheroe to support undergraduate students majoring in Philosophy. Scholarships will be awarded to the top 2 or 3 essays, depending on the number of submissions in a given year. Philosophy majors are limited to one entry per year.

Deadline: 5:00pm (EST), Wednesday, 31 January 2024

Amount: up to $500 per scholarship

Criteria for Eligibility:

The scholarship competition is open only to undergraduate philosophy majors at Purdue University's West Lafayette campus.

To Apply:

Students may apply for the scholarship by e-mailing the following materials as a single pdf to the Department of Philosophy's Academic Program Manager by 5:00pm (EST) on Wednesday, 31 January 2024

  1. A copy of a paper on any topic in philosophy, 5-15 pages in length. Normally, this will be a paper written for a philosophy class at Purdue representing your best philosophical work. In exceptional circumstances (e.g., transfer students) papers written in another context will be acceptable.
  2. A copy of the student’s transcript from Purdue University.
  3. A one-page cover letter presenting your application to the Clitheroe selection committee. The letter should include the name of at least one Purdue philosophy professor who is familiar with your work. Additional information relevant to the receipt of the scholarship (e.g., extracurricular activities) may also be included in the cover letter.

Evaluation Criteria: The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria: the quality of the submitted written work, the student’s academic record and standing, and the philosophical promise of the candidate. This is not a “paper prize,” but a scholarship for academic merit in philosophy; however, significant weight may be placed upon the submitted work as evidence of such merit. (There is a separate "paper prize" competition with a similar name, which is held in spring in conjunction with the CLA Literary Awards.)

Decisions: Decisions for the scholarship will be announced no later than 1 April 2024. The award will be applied to the student’s bursar account in one sum.
