CLA Faculty Development Centers

 

 

The Center for Artistic Endeavors supports creative projects of an artistic nature.  Proposals are welcome from full-time, tenured faculty who has records of sustained artistic achievement. Up to two fellowships are awarded each academic year. Proposals are judged based on their artistic merit, their contribution to the field of artistic activity, and the artist’s ability to fulfill the project.

 

Faculty whose proposals are selected become fellows in the center and are assigned full-time to their artistic project for one semester. During that semester the fellow will remain in residence at the University, receive a full salary (unless otherwise funded), and be free to pursue artistic work. Normally, the fellow is expected to devote full energies to the project.

 

During the semester following the fellowship period, fellows are expected to present their projects in a public panel with other fellows. These should be talks of general interest to a wide-ranging audience rather than talks directed to specialists in one field. Six semesters must elapse before a fellow may be re-appointed to the Center for Artistic Endeavors or appointed to any other the other faculty development centers in the College of Liberal Arts.

The Center for Humanistic Studies supports scholarly endeavors of a humanistic nature, those encouraging the understanding of ideas, values, and experiences. Proposals are welcome from tenured faculty with regular appointments in the humanities, arts, and social sciences who have records of sustained scholarly achievement. Proposals for specific projects are judged based on scholarly merit, potential for making an original contribution to humanistic knowledge, and ability to fulfill the project.

 

Up to two fellowships are awarded each academic year. The selection committee, however, will grant fellowships only for proposals that clearly meet the stated criteria. This guideline means that the maximum of two fellowships may not be granted in some academic years. No formal critiques will be provided.

(Formerly known as Center for Behavioral and Social Sciences)

 

The Center for Social Sciences of the College of Liberal Arts supports scholarly endeavors in the social sciences, broadly defined, with either human or animal populations. Proposals are welcome from full-time, tenured faculty who have a record of sustained scholarly achievement in the social sciences appropriate for their academic rank. Proposals are judged in terms of scholarly merit, clarity of presentation, and either the potential for integrating some existing body of literature or experimentation or the potential for defining and elucidating new problems and areas for research. 

 

Above all, emphasis will be placed on supporting projects that result in tangible outcomes such as surveys, experiments, content analyses, or qualitative analyses, which may lead to important and well-defined contributions to one or more disciplines. Up to two fellowships are awarded each academic year. The selection committee, however, will grant fellowships only for proposals that clearly meet the stated criteria. This guideline means that the maximum of two fellowships may not be granted in some academic years. No formal critiques of proposals are provided.

 

Faculty whose proposals are selected become fellows in the Center for Social Sciences and are expected to devote full time to the approved project during that semester. The fellows will remain in residence at the University, receive full salary (unless otherwise funded), and be free to pursue scholarly work.

 

During the semester following the fellowship period, fellows are expected to present their projects in a public panel with other fellows. The panel presentation (like the proposal itself) should be directed to a broad audience of social scientists, not to specialists in the fellow's own field. Six semesters must elapse before a fellow may be re-appointed to the Center for Social Sciences or appointed to any of the other faculty development centers in the College of Liberal Arts.

The Center for Undergraduate Instructional Excellence promotes excellent undergraduate teaching and learning by enabling faculty to engage in discovery that is directed to teaching. It supports faculty who desire to research and implement innovative pedagogical and curricular projects.

 

All continuing tenure-track and clinical faculty members of the College of Liberal Arts having regular professional appointments are eligible to apply. Thus, the competition is open to Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors. It is not open to teaching assistants, instructors, limited term lecturers, continuing lecturers, adjunct, or visiting faculty.

 

Fellows receive assigned research status for a semester to pursue their instructional project full-time.  A maximum of two fellows may be appointed each academic year. Proposals will be judged by a selection committee appointed by the dean. The selection committee will recommend fellowships for proposals that best meet the stated criteria.  (Thus, in some academic years the maximum number of fellowships may not be funded.)

These should be talks of general interest to a wide-ranging audience rather than talks directed to specialists in one field. Six semesters must elapse before a fellow may be re-appointed to the Center for Undergraduate Instructional Excellence or appointed to any of the other faculty development centers in the College of Liberal Arts.

 

Eligibility: Continuing tenure-track and clinical faculty

Number of Awards: Two per year
