Non-Laboratory Research Infrastructure and Equipment Program

As a research-intensive institution, Purdue University has significant equipment and research infrastructure needs.  Portions of these needs are met through private sources (foundations) and public resources (federal and state funding).  A significant need exists, however, to augment these sources with internal funds in order to advance research and scholarship activities at Purdue.

The Non-Laboratory Research Infrastructure and Equipment Program is designed to support research infrastructure and equipment needs in disciplines not driven by instrument-dependent research.  Areas in such a position include—but are not limited to—humanities, social sciences, liberal arts, education, management and libraries.

Examples of allowable infrastructure needs include

(a) equipment

(b) software

(c) database access

(d) access to special library collections, and

(e) other types of research infrastructure that could be applied across multiple research projects.

Eligibility is limited to faculty (research and tenure-track/tenured) on the West Lafayette campus in the following colleges and areas: Liberal Arts, Education, Management, Health and Human Sciences, and Libraries.  College of Health and Human Sciences research programs should be in the disciplines of social science, humanities, education, or economics in order to be eligible.  Faculty in these disciplines, as well as similar disciplines in colleges other than the ones listed above are also eligible for this program.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Programs

The Non-laboratory Research Infrastructure and Equipment Program is a two-tiered program designed to support research infrastructure and equipment needs at two levels: Tier 1 (less than $5,000) and Tier 2 (up to $20,000)  The Tier 1 program is administered through the offices of the Associate Deans for Research.  The Tier 2 program is administered through the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Tier 1 Program

Amount: requests must not exceed $5,000

The program is designed to support research efforts of both single investigator and multi-investigator users. The program is not a grant program for individual project support, but a program for resource and equipment acquisition to support one or more projects. Office and instructional computers/equipment are not eligible for this program. Applications must identify a single Principal Investigator, who must have depleted a majority of start-up funds to be eligible. An individual may submit only one application as Principal Investigator.

Tier 2 Program

Amount: requests must fall within the $5,000 – $20,000 range

Tier-2 proposals must adhere to the same guidelines as Tier 1 proposals. Special note: Proposals which have a high potential for gaining external recognition and/or funding will be given a high priority.

Post-Award and Reporting Requirements

Successful applicants are required to submit a brief final written report describing:

(a) the impact of the equipment/resources received on their research program, and

(b) any funding, publications or other external recognitions received as a result of receiving the award.

Non-Laboratory Infrastructure & Equipment Program Submission Form  - The application must use Arial 11 point font with 1.0 inch margins and follow the template form.  Incomplete applications and/or applications that do not meet these requirements will be returned without review.
