Professor Clawson Receives Schleman Award

Professor Clawson Receives Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award!

Congratulations to Professor Rosalee (Rosie) Clawson, this year’s recipient of the university-wide Dean Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award! Presented by Purdue’s chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honors Society, this award is given to a faculty member or administrator for their contributions to Purdue, especially in the promotion and advancement of women students and women’s issues.

Her nominators shared details of the many ways that Dr. Clawson “is an unparalleled advocate for women at all ranks, from undergraduates to faculty members, inside the department, across the campus, and within the discipline.” Through her mentoring, research, and many service roles, she builds communities that support and celebrate the scholarship of women.

Dr. Clawson served as Department Head in Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts from 2012 through 2018, where she focused her efforts on building an open and inclusive environment to support innovative scholarship. She is described as exemplifying “the best qualities we seek in our leaders and colleagues – a conviction and passion to meet the challenges faced by women in academia head-on to change the culture for better”

One of the many ways that Dr. Clawson inspires others is through her service as the President of the national Political Science Honors Society, Pi Sigma Alpha. Purdue’s Chapter president Francesca McCallister has been inspired: “Her direct encouragement has pushed me to pursue opportunities I could have never imagined possible such as study abroad, the pursuit of undergraduate research, and leadership opportunities.” One nominator called her “a role model and a stellar example of how to be an administrator but still remain connected to the faculty and the needs of students.” The innovative and persistent pursuit of meaningful change in the department has had lasting impact!

The Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion was started by the class of 1968 to remember and continue the legacy of Dean Helen B. Schleman who served as Dean of Women from 1947-1968. We are delighted that they selected Dr. Clawson as this year’s winner.

Please join us in recognizing Rosie for this much deserved honor!
