One of four divisions comprising the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University, the Division of Music offers courses in several aspects of music. Nearly four hundred fifty students enroll in music appreciation and music history courses each semester; one hundred twenty enroll in courses in music theory; and another one hundred enroll in a music methods class for elementary education majors. The Division of Music offers a minor in music theory and history. This fifteen-credit minor provides opportunities for advanced study to students who have special interests in the historical and theoretical aspects of music. Six of the Division's courses fulfill general education (core) requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in the College of Liberal Arts. Several also fulfill general education and elective requirements of other schools in the University. Many students combine the division's music courses with performance opportunities offered by Purdue University Bands, Purdue Musical Organizations, the Black Cultural Center and other organizations on campus and in the community. Purdue's Convocations and Lectures program brings an exiting array of professional talent to campus each year, including jazz groups, theater and dance companies, chamber music ensembles, recitalists, and symphony orchestras. The Division of Music is located in Pao Hall.
