Department Highlights

9.29.09 Professor Michael Ryan published “Byzantium, Islam, and the Great Western Schism,” in A Companion to the Great Western Schism (1378-1417),  edited by Joelle Rollo-Koster and Thomas M. Izbicki .  Leiden:  Brill, 2008.

9.24.09 Professor Sally Hastings published an article entitled: “Assassins, Madonnas, and Career Women:  Reflections on Six Decades of Woman’s Suffrage in Japan,” in Asian Cultural Studies, a review essay entitled: “House, Home, and Gender in Modern Japan,”’ In Journal of Women’s History, and another review essay entitled: “Urban Japanese, at Home and Overseas:  Different Forms of Knowledge,” in the Journal of Urban History.

9.24.09 Professor Charles Ingrao published an article entitled: "Weapons of Mass Instruction: Schoolbooks and Democratization in Multiethnic Central Europe," in the Journal of Educational Media, Memory and Society.

9.17.09 Professor John Larson published a book entitled: "The Market Revolution in America: Liberty, Ambition, and the Eclipse of the Common Good".

9.8.09 Professor Frank Lambert published a book entitled: "The Battle of Ole Miss: Civil Rights v. States' Rights".

7.17.09 Assistant Professor Stacy Holden published a book entitled: "The Politics of Food in Modern Morocco".

7.9.09 Graduate student Jamal Ratchford was given an appointment as a Kato Fellow. His responsibilities will include serving as a board member of the National Council for Black Studies for two years.

 

 

Welcome to the Department of History at Purdue University. The Department is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as historical research. The Department’s thirty-six faculty members take pride in fostering close working relationships with students. The academic year began with 80 graduate students, 378 undergraduate majors, and 117 undergraduate minors who help make the Department of History a vibrant intellectual community. The faculty members have national and international reputations for research, and the Department has earned campus-wide recognition for excellent teaching. Departmental faculty consistently win major research awards and grants, hold offices in professional organizations, and serve on editorial boards at home and abroad as well as publish articles in major journals and author critically acclaimed books. 

The Department offers faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students exchange opportunities with Peking University in Beijing, Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg, and Bilkent University in Ankara. The Honors Program provides many opportunities for students to exel in their undergraduate careers.
