Purdue IXD MFA Program Ranked 15th Best Value Interaction Design Graduate Program
Purdue IXD MFA Program was recently ranked 15th among the Top 50 Best Value Interaction Design Graduate Programs of 2018 by online college review and ranking site Value Colleges.
Faculty and students at Purdue Interaction Design program are boundary crossers, developing new approaches to explore the interaction possibilities in the context of industrial design. We are interested in studying cognitive and social systems to inform our knowledge, employing research methodologies to improve the design, and adopting innovative technologies to better accommodate human experience.
According to Value Colleges, “Purdue continued to develop as a research university, using its roots in engineering to become a leader in aviation and aerospace, a focus which made Purdue a national model for design and computing. Graduates from IXD MFA program benefit from a reputation that makes a Purdue degree a significant value.”
Purdue Industrial Design Team Wins 2017 SOFA CONNECT Design Competition
Purdue industrial desigan team is the winner of the 2017 Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design CONNECT student design competition.
This year’s competition was held as part of the SOFA Fair Nov. 2-5 at Navy Pier in Chicago. It is the fifth year of the CONNECT competition and Purdue’s second consecutive victory. The SOFA Fair is an annual exhibition of gallery-presented three-dimensional art and design. Each year, around 35,000 people attend. In the CONNECT competition, students design environments with seating and lighting that allow SOFA attendees a place to relax.
The Purdue team was made up of both undergraduate and graduate students. McKayla Barber, Hannah Ferrill, Zachary Hellman, Marshall Ma, David Marchese and Aijun Andrew Huang worked with faculty advisors TJ Kim, Steve Visser and Laura Drake on their project “Nature or Nurture: A 3D Printed Space.”
Design Good Now 2017
Over 2,500 college students from more than 30 universities around the world worked together to design assistive/adaptive devices for people with disabilities.
Design Good Now is a global design initiative developed at Purdue to take on real world challenges. It brings together universities, communities and industries from around the world in a two-day design collaborative workshop focused on designing adaptive and assistive devices for people with disabilities. The event is organized by Purdue Industrial Design in partnership with the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Purdue’s Dawn or Doom Conference.

IXD Team Won Three 2017 IEEE VAST Challenge Awards
Purdue Interaction Design graduate student Aijun Andrew Huang and associate professor Dr. Zhenyu Cheryl Qian teamed up with faculty and graduate students in Purdue Polythenic Institute, developed two Visual Analytics systems ClockPetals & WindNecura, participated in the 2017 IEEE VAST system design challenges, and won three international awards: ClockPetals system won Multi-challenge Award for Aesthetic Design; WindNecura system won Muti-challenge Award for Aesthetic Design and Outstanding Submission to the 2017 Challenge Award.
Their competitors came from the national visualization research labs and prestigious universities such as Peking University，Eindhoven University of Technology，Hong Kong University of Science and Technology，University of Amsterdam and so on.
Purdue VPA Art and Design Team Wins 2016 SOFA CHICAGO
Our team in the Department of Art and Design won the 2016 CONNECT Student competition in Chicago. As the winning school, we were awarded a cash prize from Chubb Personal Risk Service. There are over 50 Lectures and Booth Events at SOFA CHICAGO including Live Demonstrations and Book Signings. Meet famed artists from around the world and learn about their inspiration and process – all included with general admission.
Design Good Now 2016
What happens when design students and biomedical engineering students are set loose in a co-working space for 24 hours? The inaugural Design Good Now event sought to find out by bridging the gaps between engineering, technology, and design. Teams were given a problem to solve and 24 hours to ideate, prototype, and 3D print a final solution. Across the globe, students from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Kookmin University worked on the same design challenges, staying in contact via video chat throughout the event. Follow their process and watch their presentation videos here, and see local news coverage on WLFI 18.
