Katherine Roseau
Please join me in congratulating Katherine Roseau, a Ph.D. candidate in French literature in the School of Languages and Cultures, on receiving the 2017-2018 doctoral grant from the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah (Paris), in partnership with the Emilie du Châtelet Institute, for her research on “Jewish Women in France During the Second World War and the Post-War Period.”
Katherine will use this funding to complete her dissertation, “Writing the Self in Occupied Paris: Identity Construction and the Functions of Individual and Collective Memory in Diaries.” Her dissertation considers diarists from diverse backgrounds and Katherine’s archival research at the Shoah Memorial has led her to focus on writings by Jewish Parisians in two of her chapters. One sheds light on place identity, and the other studies the diary as a unique place of communication with others in the near and distant futures. In the spring, Katherine will travel to Paris to work with the Foundation and the Memorial to create a publicly accessible digital mapping project with the working title “Walk alongside Jewish women in their multiple Parises. Meeting time: 1940.”
