Daniel Winchester

Please join me in congratulating Daniel Winchester, assistant professor of sociology, on his Social Forces article, “A Hunger for God: Embodied Metaphor as Cultural Cognition in Action,” receiving this year’s Clifford Geertz Award for Best Article from the American Sociology Association Culture Section. Dan's article uses an ethnographic study of fasting among Eastern Orthodox Christian converts to better conceptualize how cognitive and cultural processes interact to generate meaning and influence social action.

Dan’s main areas of research are the sociology of religion, cultural sociology, social theory, identity and the self, and qualitative methodology. He is currently working on publications based on his ethnographic studies of contemporary conversions to Islam and Eastern Orthodox Christianity in the United States as well as conducting research for a new project on Evangelical missionary culture.

Congratulations, Professor Winchester!
