Philo Wasburn

Please join me in congratulating Philo Wasburn, an Emeritus professor of sociology, on the publication of his most recent book, Making Citizens: Political Socialization Research and Beyond (Springer International Publishing, 2017).

Co-authored by Purdue sociology alumna Tawna Adkins Covert (PhD 2001), this is Philo’s ninth book. Making Citizens assembles what political scientists, sociologists, and communication analysts have learned in almost six decades of research on political socialization. It also explores how people develop political values, attitudes, identities, and behavioral dispositions. Of particular interest is the process by which people are made into active citizens who are politically interested, informed, partisan, tolerant and engaged. Finally, Philo and Tawnya identify some suggestions for institutional change that would lead to “better” citizenship.

Philo’s other published works include Broadcasting Propaganda: International Radio Broadcasting and the Construction of Political Reality, The Social Construction of International News, and Media Bias? A Comparative Study of Time, Newsweek, The National Review and the Progressive Coverage of Domestic Social Issues. His research has appeared in journals such as Political Communication, The International Journal of Contemporary Sociology, The Sociological Quarterly, The Journal of Political and Military Sociology, Media, Culture and Society and The Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media.

Congratulations, Professor Wasburn!
