Margaret Mih Tillman
Please join me in congratulating Margaret Mih Tillman, assistant professor of history and an affiliate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, for receiving a 2017-2018 U.S. Fulbright grant to support her research in Taiwan for the upcoming academic year.
The Fulbright program awards grants for individually designed research projects. With the Fulbright award Margaret will be conducting research at Academia Sinica and Academia Historica for her second manuscript, tentatively titled, “Tested: Cultivating Talent and China’s Standardized Exams, 1905-1977.” This project explores how and why testing, even in the aftermath of the abolition of the Civil Service Exams in 1905, became integrated into academic promotion to key (elite) schools, and its impact on Chinese conceptions of meritocracy. Along with receiving the Fulbright grant, she has received the prestigious Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies Fellowship to conduct further research in the People's Republic of China in 2018.
Margaret’s first book manuscript, "Precocious Politics," explores the modernization of childrearing practices in twentieth-century China and is under contract for publication by Columbia University Press.
She has also conducted archival research in Taipei, Shanghai, and Beijing, with grants from the Center for Chinese Studies (National Central Library, Taiwan), the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, the Fulbright DDRA, the Fulbright IIE, and a PRC 985 Research Grant through Fudan University.
