Laura Zanotti
Please join me in congratulating Laura Zanotti, professor of anthropology, on the publication of her most recent work, Radical Territories in the Brazilian Amazon (The University of Arizona Press).
Weaving together anthropological and ethnographic research with personal interactions with the Kayapó, Laura tells the story of activism and justice in the Brazilian Amazon, and how Kayapó communities are using diverse pathways to make a sustainable future for their peoples and lands. She interweaves Kayapó perspectives with a political ecological framework to show how working with indigenous peoples is vital to addressing national and global challenges in the present time, when many environmentally significant conditions and processes are profoundly altered by human activities.
Laura has affiliations with the Center for the Environment, American Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. She is also dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate students at Purdue meaningful experiences to thrive in the multicultural and interconnected world in which they live and work. Laura won the Department of Anthropology Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013 and was the recipient of the Faculty Appreciation Award in American Studies in 2012. Her work has resulted in over ten published articles, an edited volume with Routledge, and several book chapters. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and Purdue University.
