Kathryn Cramer Brownell
Please join me in congratulating Kathryn Cramer Brownell, assistant professor of history, on having her article “Gerald Ford, Saturday Night Live, and the Development of the Entertainer in Chief” published by Presidential Studies Quarterly. Katie's article uncovers the place of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford in navigating a shifting media landscape with the tools of entertainment and transforming public perceptions of the presidency in the process.
Her recent book, Showbiz Politics: Hollywood in American Political Life (UNC Press) examines the institutionalization of Hollywood styles and structures in American politics over the course of the twentieth century. She also published, “The Making of the Celebrity Presidency,” in the new book Recapturing the Oval Office: New Historical Approaches to the American Presidency. Katie is currently working on a political history of cable television from the Nixon administration through the Clinton years.
