Derek Pacheco
Please join me in congratulating Derek Pacheco, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies for the Department of English, who has recently been selected as President-Elect of the Hawthorne Society, a national organization dedicated to the life and works of New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne, and to public ambassadorship of the humanities in our fast-changing globalized environment.
Derek earned his Ph.D. from UCLA and has taught at Purdue since 2008 with specializations in 19th-century American culture. Within the department, he has been awarded the Overall Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the College of Liberal Arts’ award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher, and the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.
Derek has authored a book and several articles. He edits the Emerson Society Papers newsletter. He’s now working on a book, Hawthorne’s Literary Offspring, which puts the author in conversation with a variety of other ante- and postbellum writers equally engaged in constructing and deconstructing children’s fantasy genre.
