Robert E. May

Please join me in congratulating Robert E. May, professor emeritus in history on publishing "The Irony of Confederate Diplomacy: Visions of Empire, the Monroe Doctrine, and the Quest for Nationhood” in The Journal of Southern History

An expert on U.S. 19th century "filibustering" (illegal private military expeditions against foreign countries), Professor May has written three books and many articles about the subject. Published in The Journal of Southern History, Bob writes about how the outbreak of the Civil War abruptly aborted Confederate leaders' intentions of growing their domain into Latin America and spreading slavery there once the South's independence was established. Bob cites the works of several Purdue department historians, including Harold D. Woodman.

Congratulations, Professor May!
