TJ Kim

TJ Kim, associate professor of industrial and interaction design in the Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts, won a Platinum A' Design Award for his work DigiLock in the digital and electronic devices category at the A' International Design Award and Competition in Italy.

DigiLock is a bike lock with built-in fingerprint reading technology. The user can set up and charge the lock by connecting to a computer using a micro-USB cable. TJ’s design solves several problems associated with current bike locks: losing the key, forgetting the combination, or having a thief cut the lock. Multiple accounts can be set up on the lock to share it, and users receive a theft alert when the lock is being tampered with.

The A' Design Award is the largest international design award and competition in existence. This year, there were over 15,000 entries from 83 different countries. TJ’s Platinum Award places him in the top one percent of designers entering the competition.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Kim for his achievement!
