ENGL 40700 Introduction to Poetry Writing

This course, designed for students who already have some experience in the writing of poetry, offers a forum for the critique of poems-in-progress, the chance to read and discuss challenging contemporary poetry, and an on-going conversation about current poetic issues. Most of the class time will be devoted to the workshop, in which students will submit xeroxed copies of their poems to the class for constructive critique. This intensive workshop experience will be supplemented by the reading and discussion of poems from Elizabeth Bishop’s Collected Poems and The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry.
