Sports Studies and Production Certificate

Admission Requirements

This certificate requires 2 parts: 9 credit hours of coursework and a minimum of 2 sessions of experiential learning with Hall of Music Productions or Intercollegiate Athletics. The student will complete a minimum of 2 sessions of work with Hall of Music Productions or Intercollegiate Athletics, with each session focusing on a different sport. Each session requires a minimum of 50 hours of work to be completed within a semester. This number was chosen as it corresponds to 1 credit of FVS 450: Internship in Film/Video/Media Production. This work may be taken as internship credit under FVS 450, **OR** may be taken as paid work as a student employee of Hall of Music Productions or Intercollegiate Athletics.

  • AMST 21000 - Sport in American Culture: This course engages critical questions regarding sport and its role in American culture. It examines the ways sport serves as a key site for the study of larger social issues and social problems, including how race, gender, social class and other social locations are simultaneously reproduced and challenged in and through sport. The course also explores the relationships between sport and other major social institutions, such as the economy, education, politics, and media. Typically offered Fall Spring. 

  • AMST 32500 - Sports, Technology, and Innovation: This course examines how science, technology, engineering, and data analysis reshape sports. Traditionally, sports have been understood as competitions between humans. However, recent technoscientific developments have altered this arrangement and have changed the ways sports are played. We have reached a place where heated competitions not only take place on the fields of play, but also within scientific and engineering laboratories. The fundamental question this project-based course will address is: how will new and emerging scientific knowledge and technological innovations transform sports? We will explore topics ranging from football, baseball, basketball, and soccer, to e-sports, fantasy sports, and sports analytics. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer.

  • FVS 33200 - Live Events Video Production: This experiential course furthers the students’ understanding of technical video production. Production meetings, viewings, discussions, and event productions increase the students’ proficiency with the technology and equipment as well as the art involved in the craft. Film Students have priority. Typically offered Fall Spring.

  • FVS 33201 - Sports video Production Fall/Winter: This experiential course furthers the students’ understanding of live sports video production. Lecture combined with various production experiences increase the students’ proficiency with professional technology and equipment as well as the art and storytelling of the craft.  Potential Men’s and Women’s Fall/Winter sports include Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Basketball, or Track & Field.

  • FVS 33202 - Sports Video Production Winter/Spring: This experiential course furthers the students’ understanding of live sports video production. Lecture combined with various production experiences increase the students’ proficiency with professional technology and equipment as well as the art and storytelling of the craft. Potential Men’s and Women’s Winter/Spring sports include Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Golf, or Track & Field.

Intership (2 credits)

The student will complete a minimum of 2 sessions of work with Hall of Music Productions or Intercollegiate Athletics, with each session focusing on a different sport. Each session requires a minimum of 50 hours of work to be completed within a semester.

  • FVS 45000 - Internship In Film/Video/Media Production: Internships in one of the professional areas of film, video or media production. Internships are supervised by appropriate faculty in a particular field of specialization. Permission of instructor required.This work may be taken as internship credit under FVS 45000, **OR** may be taken as paid work as a student employee of Hall of Music Productions or Intercollegiate Athletics.
