The Purdue Contemporary Dance Company, housed in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance in    Yue-Kong Pao Hall, presents new works by two dance faculty, three select student artists and a Guest Artist from the Purdue Black Cultural Center. The Division of Dance and Theatre Department faculty and students collaborate intensively to create original art on the stage, and to prepare students for careers in these performative disciplines. Original movement is created in the studio for each work over the course of the entire semester. All works are accompanied by original music/sound created specifically for these dances by students in the Theatre Department’s Sound Design program in collaboration with choreographers. Rueff School light-design students work with choreographers to craft special light designs on the Hansen Theatre stage.

Commune is a new dance from Joshua L. Ishmon, Dancer and Resident Choreographer for Chicago’s Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, Co-Founder and Director of Production:COLORS, as well as the Artist in Residence for the Purdue Black Cultural Center’s Jahari Dance Ensemble.  This new work was developed with the PCDC dancers to explore the imperative need for people to support, trust and breathe with others to ensure some semblance of progress, especially in times of challenge and fatigue.

Faculty choreographer Kathleen Hickey plunges into the idea of memories and how we hold onto the movement of them in her new work Evocative Upsurges of Nostalgia. Working with a cast of thirteen dancers, Hickey moves them through the space with ease utilizing dynamic patterns, robust jumps, and spiral movement that creates community.
